Meet Charlie Prior, a 5 year old boy in our district that quickly captured the attention of our hearts and minds. Charlie was born in December of 2015 after a normal pregnancy and without complication. After some signs of developmental delays, Charlie was dealt a diagnosis of profound impact, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a genetic disorder characterized by the progressive loss of muscle. It is a multi-systemic condition, affecting many parts of the body, which results in deterioration of the skeletal, cardiac (heart), and pulmonary (lung) muscles.

In April of this year Charlie's mother, Cheryl, reached out to the fire department requesting documentation that two forms of egress from the home are important for fire safety. Cheryl and her husband Charles were in pursuit of assistance to build a ramp on the rear of their home to provide Charlie an egress point that eliminated the very steep and very treacherous stairs. Their request of the fire department was simply to provide a statement that we support the need for safe egress, the Priors were working with the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and were struggling to build traction for ramp funding (the project was denied twice).

Recognizing the severe consequences of Charlie falling down the stairs or being unable to exit the home, the Manlius Fire Department does what it always does - we jumped into action. A commitment was made to Charlie, his brother Noah, and his parents to ensure a ramp would be constructed by the end of the summer this year. Through the generous donations of Dimon Construction, the Manlius Fire Company, and The Town of Manlius Police Department Benevolent Association the ramp is now complete!! Volunteers from the fire department performed initial construction tasks (digging holes and pouring footers) while Dimon Construction completed the build itself by donating their labor and expertise. The Manlius Fire Company and the Town of Manlius Police Benevolent Association provided the funding for the materials.

In addition to bringing Charlie into our extended fire department family, we welcome his grandmother, Sharon, into our group of Fire Department Auxiliary Members. This simple ramp project has become so much more than a safe means of egress for a magical little boy, it has rallied the community, created a new fire department volunteer and provided a bright moment for so many.
